Meniere's disease
This is the condition of inner ear. It affects to any one of any age but mostly occurs between ages 20 to 50.
Temporary Symptoms:
Following are the symptoms of Meniere's disease:
- Dulled hearing in the affected ears - Varying the hearing loss
- Vertigo - This is lightheadedness with the spinning sensation. It is little bit severe and feel like vomit or sick. It is developed without any warning. You have to go to bed until vertigo passes.
- Tinnitus - The sounds like ringing, buzzing or roaring can hear from inside the ear.
- Ear pressure - Patient can feel the pressure or fullness inside the ear.
Meniere's disease attacks may last from 20 min to some hours. Average of this is 2 to 4 hours. After the attack, people feel sleepy. When attack is longer then patient can fill slight unsteadiness.
Symptoms of this disease may vary from one person to another and time to time. A typical attack is of hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo lasts a few hours. Some people have vertigo without hearing loss is common but hearing loss without vertigo is very uncommon.
At the time of attack, some people have slight vertigo while some harshly affected and vomit for some hours.
Permanent Symptoms:
For the permanent symptoms, several months or years are required to develop.
Hearing loss - At first during the attack, hearing loss is temporary. In the primary stages of the attack, hearing generally reverts after attack is over. In some people it is worse and cause permanent hearing loss.
Tinnitus - At the primary stages, tinnitus is also temporary as like hearing loss but it gets permanent as time passes.
Causes of Meniere's disease:
Meniere's disease caused because of slight damage and changes in inner ear.
Diagnosis of Meniere's disease:
The diagnosis of Meniere's disease is based on the symptoms. The formal hearing test at the time of attack helps to diagnosis. But this is impractical because attack generally comes out of blue and feels quite ill. As time passes, the diagnosis is become clear because development of typical patterns of the attacks.
Other conditions can also cause same symptoms to the Meniere. For example: Infection, injury, or tumors in inner ear can cause tinnitus, deafness or vertigo.
Treatment:
Understanding the proper cause of symptoms is helpful for the treatment. Meniere's disease can be unpleasant; but it is not because of brain, cancer or nerve disorder. There is no any cure for the Meniere's disease but their symptoms may be helped.
